Broadleaf Dock
Perennial as the grass, and opportunistically reproducing
mainly by seed. Like other coastal inhabitants,
inclined to make its way in the world in wet and poorly drained areas.
A large mound of foliage is its settled plumage of display.
Rosette-shaped spirit, contemplative, and durable.
Laying prostrate to the ground only to better protect
and support the underused, discounted, and inconspicuous.
Densely packed like its hopes, yet terminal
primarily focused on living and growing undisturbed.
Mature, even flowering in rust-colored panicles.
Brown in the winter, a root’s favorite color.
Like other locals, as commonly found in fields,
meadows and pastures, exceptionally pleased
when things are settled and comfortable.
Persistent as the wind on sandstone.
Attached to the home as iron is to water
it drinks to provide nature’s irrigation to each bare patch.
The most generous of plants, there is freedom where it can grow.
